Dear Editor,
It is often said that history repeats itself, Consider the life of the infamous man born “Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus” later known as “Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus” or simply “Nero” ; Roman Emperor from 54AD to 68AD.
I recently read an article on Nero and was surprised at the parallels that can be dawn to the current Guyanese “Emperor”
Nero was never supposed to be emperor or Rome ; he had no direct claim to the throne through blood line (indirect through his mother).
Nero gained the throne through skillful political manipulation by his mother, Agrippa the younger.
It is said that our current Guyanese “emperor” initially came to power through skillful political manipulation by our former female president.
Nero’s mother was initially the “power behind the throne” but as Nero became stronger politically he quickly thrust her aside, eventually ordering her to be killed.
Our current Guyanese “Emperor” did indeed thrust aside the woman who supported his ascent to power; remember the statement “Mrs. J is entitled to her opinion as a private citizen.”Nero ostracized and purged all who opposed him. Our current Guyanese “Emperor”: hmmm, sorry Moses but your 40 years in the wilderness is not yet up, nor yours Khemraj.
Nero spent extravagantly; the coffers of Rome were his to personally do with as he pleased.
It has been noted by historians that Nero’s construction projects were overly extravagant and the large number of expenditures under Nero left Rome “thoroughly exhausted by contributions of money” with “the provinces ruined”.
Sounds familiar?
It has been said in some quarters that Nero suffered from “mania” and “grandiose delusions.”
Didn’t someone recently diagnose our “Guyanese Emperor” with grandiose delusions?
I sincerely hope for the country’s sake that the famous (maybe inaccurate saying)” Nero fiddled while Rome burnt” doesn’t occur, even though they have been numerous fires recently and our “Emperor” seems quite adept at “fiddling”.
So do we have a Guyanese incarnation of Nero? You decide. Just keep you ears tweaked for eerie music coming from Main Street.
