– Competition starts next Wednesday
Digicel Guyana Inc. Inked its name to the Coral 280 National Domino Championship after pledging $2 million to T/Point Sports Club courtesy of a cheque that was presented by Advertising Manager Ramesh Rupchand to Vice-President of the club Colin McEwan Jr. recently in the company’s boardroom on Barrack & Fort Street, Kingston.
The sponsorship which was done under the Coral 280 Cell Phone brand will see the tournament run off in all three counties (Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice) for the biggest first prize in local domino history, $400,000 plus trophy, while the runner-up team is set to collect $150,000 plus trophy, 3rd place $100,000 plus trophy, 4th place $50,000 plus trophy and 5th place $20,000.00 plus trophy.
Consolations prizes are also up for grabs and they include tournament’s Most Valuable Player, who will take away $5,000.00 plus trophy, person sharing the 1st love in finals will cart off $5,000 plus trophy, the team with the highest games in the play-offs will collect $10,000 and the best attired team $15,000.
Entrance fee is $7,000 per team and each team will receive one Coral 280 Handset activated with $2,500 in Digicel’s Easyflex minutes.
Meanwhile, the launching of the tournament was done on Wednesday evening at the National Gymnasium where Digicel Activities & Events Manager Gavin Hope handed over a replica cheque to McEwan Jr in the presence of officials and team representatives who turned up to pay their entrance fee and collect their fixtures along with the activated Coral 280 handset and $2,500 credit.
The Competition begins next Wednesday and over 200 teams are anticipated to enter for the chance to grab the coveted Digicel 1st Prize of $400,000.
The tournament will be divided up into 24 zones with Georgetown allotted 9; East Coast Demerara 4; West Demerara 3; Essequibo 2, East Bank Demerara 2, Bartica 1, Linden 1, East Berbice 1 and West Berbice 1.
Other than clubs, any 6 to 9 persons desirous of entering can come together to form a team and enter this National Tournament.
Companies, organizations and ministries are also encouraged to enter as many teams as possible and will be playing amongst themselves in zones 6, 7 & 8; the qualifying teams from those 3 zones will then meet the other qualifying teams at the National Gymnasium for the playoffs on Easter Sunday, April 24 when the tournament is expected to conclude.
