Shockwaves rippled through Gaulding Place, South Ruimveldt yesterday following the news of a brutal murder. Around 15:00 hrs, two female students from South Ruimveldt Secondary discovered the body of 74-year-old Khirul Najidam, called Babloo Saddick. She was popularly known in the area as “Aunty”.
The body was found in a store room located in the lower flat of her 1215 Gaulding Place home.
Police sources told Kaieteur News that the woman’s body was bound and gagged. Her home was ransacked and relatives could not determine what exactly was taken from the residence.
One of the woman’s neigbhours told this publication that Saddick was last seen alive around 12:00hrs yesterday. The neighbour explained that Saddick, who has a small stand downstairs, would sell sweets and other items.
“We see her around lunch time…because the children from the school come and buy pickle and stuff,” the neighbour explained.
It was around 15:00hrs when a group of school children went to the woman’s house to make a purchase that the murder was unveiled. This newspaper was told that the children continued calling for the elderly woman, but got no response.
Two young girls from the group reportedly ventured further into the yard and discovered the woman’s body in the storeroom. The discovery sent the young girls running out the yard and over to a nearby internet café where they recounted what they had seen.
Neighbours immediately went to investigate and the police were called in. One neighbour recalled seeing three young boys running from the house some time before 15:00hrs, but didn’t make anything of it, since people would normally try to steal the woman’s fruits.
Police arrived several minutes after being summoned and quickly cordoned off the scene. The two girls who made the discovery were questioned and taken to the station for further questioning.
Meanwhile, the woman’s only sister was inconsolable at the house yesterday. One of Khirul’s nieces said that they received a call some time after 15:00hrs yesterday. The woman recounted that the caller said they should immediately come to South Ruimveldt.
“Somebody called and say we should come quick….something happen to Aunty,” the niece explained. She said that Khirul lived alone after her husband died a few years back. The woman, according to relatives, did not have any children.
Many who gathered at the scene said they knew ‘Aunty’ as a very peaceful, private individual who made an income by selling pickled mango and other fruits to children and others in her area.
Persons said that the woman had been conducting her small business for more than fifteen years and was very helpful and friendly.
Neighbours said they did not hear any screams coming from the woman’s house .
