Deonarine, Chattergoon, Crandon back in action
By Sean Devers
With five teams ahead of them on the points table going in the fifth round of the eight-team Regional four-day cricket tournament from next Friday, Guyana will make use of the break this Carnival weekend with a two-day practice match at Bourda from 09:30 today.
Test left-handers Narsingh Deonarine and Sewnarine Chattergoon who missed the first four games due to injury will be back in action and once available will be a major boast for Guyana’s next match. Pacer Esuan Crandon who suffered a side strain in St. Vincent and missed the last match will also participate in this match.
The Assad Fudadin led Guyana team are on 13 points, one ahead of Barbados and 10 more than bottom-placed Leeward Islands, heading into their next game against England Lions at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence from next Friday.
Three-time defending champions Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago share the lead with 36 points after four rounds while England Lions (30), CCC (27) and Windward Islands (23) are the teams ahead of the South Americans on the points table.
Guyana lost to host Jamaica after taking first innings points, had their second round match against the Leewards washed out at Bourda without a ball being bowled, lost to the Windwards in St. Vincent and took first innings points in their drawn encounter at Providence.
While they saved their best batting performance for the first innings of their home game against Barbados by scoring 330, the batting which again faltered in the second innings of that match, has been Guyana’s biggest worry this season after their bowlers bowled well in every game so far.
The Guyanese, who won the last of their six titles at this level in 1998, will be without leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo, their leading bowler, for the game against the English since he has been called-up to join the West Indies team at the World Cup.
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and Test pacer Brendon Bess have both had five wicket hauls this season and will have to carry the bowling attack in the absence of Bishoo while off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed or teenage leg-spinner Amir Khan could replace Bishoo in the squad which will be named next week.
Mark Harper was appointed Coach for the first three matches but while they have lost two games, the young side has played fairly well without their four Test batsmen who are unavailable due to West Indies commitments and injury. Had Bishoo been available on the last day of their game against Barbados, Guyana could pressed for victory.
Guyana play CCC in Barbados and Trinidad &Tobago at Albion after their game against England Lions and they can still qualify for the semi-finals.
The teams for today’s practice match will be led by Fudadin and former West Indies under-19 Skipper Steven Jacobs.
Fudadin’s X1 – Assad Fudadin, Rajendra Chandrika, Richard Ramdin, Leon Johnson, Vishaul Singh, Narsingh Deonarine, Royston Crandon, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Christopher Hemraj, Anthony Bramble, Steven Latcha, Totaram Bishoo, Amir Khan, Brendon Bess, Raj Nanan and Andre Stoll.
