Set 292 for victory from a minimum of 48 overs and the mandatory 15 in the final hour on the final day of their fourth round Regional Four-Day cricket match against Guyana at the Providence Stadium yesterday, Barbados finished on 87-4 as the game ended in a draw.
Without leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, who will replace the injured Dwayne Bravo in the West Indies World Cup squad in India, Guyana did not have the fire power to capture 10 wickets yesterday to achieve their first win on home soil against Barbados in 27 years and seemed to have settled for a draw as early as late on the penultimate day.
Scores: Guyana 330 & 163-9, Barbados 202 & 87-4
Guyana resumed on 90-4 when play began 30 minutes late due to rain and quickly lost both overnight batsmen with the score on 111 when Royston Crandon, who hit three fours and a six was bowled by Stoute and Vishaul Singh (14) was removed by Collins.
Six runs later Derwin Christian (2) fell to Collins before Chris Barnwell (11) and Man-of the Match Veerasammy Permaul took the score to 141 when the tall teenaged Jason Holder bowled Barnwell.
Permaul and Brendon Bess carried Guyana to 146 when another shower sent the players scurrying off the field, forcing the teams to take an early Lunch.
When play eventually re-started in sunny conditions at 13:15hrs, Permaul continued to play his shots on the slow and low track before left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds struck with his fourth ball of the day when Permaul, who struck four fours in his 24, drove a catch to extra cover.
Without Davendra Bishoo who has been selected to represent the West Indies as replacement in the World Cup in India, Guyana ended their innings with Bess unbeaten on 12.
When Barbados began their reply, teenager Kraigg Braithwaite and Test opener Dale Richards carried the score to 16 before Richards (13) whipped Bess to Rajendra Chandrika at backward Square-leg as Guyana made the breakthrough.
Kyle Hope (6) was trapped leg before to the medium pace of Skipper Assad Fudadin at 25-2 while the Bajans who has lost first innings points in all three of their drawn matches this season, lost Hinds (3) at 36-3 when he played no shot to Permaul and was leg before.
By Tea Barbados were in trouble at 50-4 with Stoute on four when Braithwaite was caught behind on the stroke of Tea for a patient 13, cutting at leg-spinner Leon Johnson.
Stoute (24*) and Roston Chase (18*)survived the final session as Guyana used the part time spin of Vishaul Singh for a couple of overs and Gajanand Singh for one with the contest heading for a tame draw in overcast conditions. The game was eventually called off with 10 of the mandatory overs remaining.
Guyana collected six points to move to 13 from four matches while Barbados, without a title since 2007, received three points for the fourth consecutive time in this year’s competition to advance to 12 points.
After a break this weekend, the tournament resumes on March 11 with Guyana playing England Lions at Providence and Barbados facing the Windwards in Barbados.
