Suriname President Desi Bouterse landed in Georgetown last Saturday evening after his plane returned the Guyana delegation from the CARICOM HEADS of Government Conference in Grenada. Guyana’s mission to the Grenada talks was headed by President Jagdeo.
After a short meeting with President Jagdeo and dinner at the New Thriving Restaurant with the Guyanese President, he left Guyana on the stroke of midnight. Sources told the Kaieteur News that the two CARICOM Presidents discussed the proposed bridging of the Corentyne River, crime and immigration. On the issue of immigration, both leaders agreed to the regularisation of the river-boat system whereby Guyanese land in Suriname and Surinamese touchdown in Guyana through the unregulated speed boat system.
The Heads feel that such regularisation will have a greater impact on the monitoring of criminals. President Jagdeo is pushing for an early start to the bridge construction between the two countries. A source said it is in keeping with the desire of Mr. Jagdeo to have the bridge started before he demits office. President Bouterse who was returned to power via democratic means, is wanted on a European arrest warrant initiated by the Dutch police. It is unlikely that he can be arrested since the warrant was issued before he became the elected leader of a sovereign country. Recently, President Jagdeo told the media that a foreign country requested Bouterse’s arrest and extradition but he refused to identify the state that allegedly made the request. He indicated that his government would not be adhering to such a request. Recent reports had linked Bouterse to convicted Guyanese drug dealer who is presently incarcerated in the United States of America.
