The Upper Demerara Football Association’s (UDFA) last week hosted a successful three-day facilitator’s seminar for Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Referees, and other officials on “Gender, Youth and Violence training” which concluded on Friday February 11.
Participants expressed profound appreciation for the activity which had as its objectives; to increase understanding of the principles of gender equality and the creation of gender-safe environments; to enhance the understanding of gender roles and gender stereotyping.
Participants were also trained in relevant anger and conflict management and resolution techniques.
The seminar was conducted by the Human Services Ministry through the Region 10 Domestic Violence Committee in partnership with UNIFEM and the UDFA.
Participants are being prepared for the upcoming “Man Up! Be a Champion for Change” football tournament which will be launched shortly and will feature Under 23 clubs. Mr. Abbas Mancey of the Ministry of Human Services and Mr. Kevin Messiah of Help and Shelter were the facilitators during the 3-day seminar. The upcoming tournament according to the UDFA will see clubs being placed in two groups and will compete on a round-robin/knock-out format where the top four from each group will advance to the semifinals.
However, the selected clubs would also have to attend one lecture session per week for five weeks, where they will also earn points for attendance.
The sessions will cover gender roles, gender base violence, fatherhood, anger and conflict management and resolution techniques. Fixtures for matches along with attendance of sessions will be released on Thursday.
Mancey expressed delight for the opportunity to work with the UDFA on what he described as a very transformative programme.
Meanwhile, UDFA Vice President Sharma Solomon who is also Vice Chairman of Region 10’s Domestic Violence Committee said that the programme is in keeping with the UDFA’s Developmental Agenda which forms part of the Association’s Four (4) Year Development Strategy.
