Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, in his budget presentation on Tuesday evening, revealed that a whopping $747M has been allocated in the 2011 budget as Capital Expenditure for sports, which is heartening for the sports fraternity in Guyana.
“The sports fraternity is indeed heartened by the 2011 budget allocation to sport. The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh announced that the Government has allocated $747 million for Capital Expenditure,” Kumar said in his presentation Tuesday evening.
Kumar said that the budget allocation demonstrates Government’s commitment to the completion of the Olympic-size Swimming Pool and construction of the Synthetic Track and Field facility among other facilities such as the Racquet Centre.
“Further, this compassionate and responsible Government will be developing facilities in the ten regions; the special track (at the National Park) utilised by hundreds of Guyanese and by cyclists for training will be resurfaced to the delight of all the stakeholders,” Kumar noted. Works on the circuit at the National Park is near completion after commencing earlier this week.
He told the National Assembly that the Swimming Pool and Racquet Centre will be opened in a few weeks while the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will upgrade the Colgrain Pool. He is of the view that young athletes should be able to access facilities.
“Government has allocated $100 million to the development of playing fields in all the regions. It is our responsibility to provide the necessary facilities to make it possible for our youths and students to play more active roles in sport,” Kumar highlighted.
According to the Director of Sport, Government’s spending on sports must be fully supported. It is such initiatives, he said, that give rise to personal and social discipline. He informed that it can in no way be ignored that sportsmen and women are among the most influential human beings in the world. (Edison Jefford)
