The mother and stepfather of a 21-year-old East Canje carpenter have been arrested pending investigations into the man’s mysterious death.
The cousins of Chaitram Basdeo of Lot 911 New Area, Canefield, East Canje, Berbice, are convinced that foul play was involved. They believe that the matter is not being handled as it should by law enforcement officers.
Around 21:45 hours on Saturday, Basdeo, also known as Ravi, collapsed and began to pant for breath after drinking a concoction of boiled carilla and aloes, as part of a normal health routine. Basdeo lived with his mother, Kamaloon Rahim and stepfather, Vinod Yashadeow.
The relatives of the man, who preferred not to be named, said that they suspect that Basdeo’s herbal drink was poisoned. They stated that an autopsy revealed that Basdeo’s entire stomach was corroded by a substance.
The man’s cousins said that Basdeo’s stepbrother rushed upstairs after he had collapsed and saw him [Basdeo] lying on the bed panting for breath. He then called the parents. The dying man tried to utter words but these were unintelligible.
He was then rushed to the
New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Doctors had previously said that the man was not responding to any treatment.
The cousins are not satisfied with the manner in which the police at the Reliance Police Station are dealing with the matter. According to them, a CID officer visited the man’s parents, just asked a few questions and left.
He left with a bottle which contained the remainder of the carilla and aloes concoction which Basdeo last drank before his death.
The cousins approached ‘B’ Division Commander, Steven Merai yesterday and related their suspicions. A group of policemen subsequently arrested Basdeo’s mother and stepfather. They were still in police custody up to press time last evening. (Leon Suseran)
