In the name of progress, the authorities in this country sometimes conduct inexplicable exercises and implement measures which defy all logic.
One such action is the recent closure of the main thoroughfare which provides persons leaving the city with access to the East Bank Highway – en route to villages on the East Bank of Demerara, West Bank, West Coast, and by extension, Essequibo and Linden.
The reason for the closure is essentially to facilitate the widening of a bridge at the junction of Saffon and Sussex Streets, which will eventually allow for the roadway south of the intersection to be extended.
However, despite there being no work taking place at nights, the road remains closed to all traffic which means that smaller roadways through Albouystown – which are already in a state of disrepair – have to bear the brunt of hundreds of vehicles, including container trucks and heavy construction equipment.
The question is, why can’t even a single lane be made accessible to vehicles when there is no work to ease the obvious pressure being created by the sudden inconvenience?
