– to decide on way forward today
It seems as though the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) is out of options when it comes to the advancement of the sport in the community and its programmes because of the lack of progress on the rehabilitation of the Mackenzie Sports Club court.
Except for a new bleacher on the Eastern side of the Mackenzie court, which the club built on its own in September, the much-anticipated resurfacing and renovation of the court has been stalled, resulting in a major slump in the playing of the sport in Linden.
“We don’t have a court to play any basketball. Initially, when the rehabilitation talks came up we were not sure if we should remove the rings, fearing the very situation we are in right now but we complied and look what is happening,” LABA President, Abdulla Hamid told Kaieteur Sport yesterday when contacted for comment on this ongoing issue.
The LABA had removed both of the backboards on the court, hoping that the renovation works would have been done in a timely manner. Instead, nothing has been done to the court that makes it better than it was before despite contracts being awarded to contractors.
Hamid said that the association is meeting today to decide on the way forward for the sport since they have no firm alternative. A frustrated Hamid reiterated the importance of an isolated facility like the Mackenzie court when he said that there is not much the LABA can activate without the facility.
The Mackenzie court is the main playing venue in Linden that accommodates both players and spectators in the community. Its unnecessary unavailability has placed a major strain on the sub-association responsible for the development of the sport in Linden.
“We may have to go and beg one of the schools to use their court, and even those courts are not good enough for us. So we know that it is looking like the LABA not functioning, but there isn’t much else we can do about our situation,” Hamid indicated.
With a New Year already advancing, the unavailability of the MSC court is seriously threatening the LABA’s 2011 Season. Competitive basketball has been absent in Linden since June last year and that could very well continue without the MSC basketball court. (Edison Jefford)
