Jennifer Davis of Lethem, Region Nine, appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry charged with theft. To the charge, Davis pleaded not guilty.
She was unrepresented.
It is alleged that between December 1, 2010 to January 12, 2011, at Lethem, Davis and Nadia Martin pilfered $2,348,295 while being entrusted to sell fuel at the Lam’s Service Station. The two were also tasked with recording sales.
Martin was absent during yesterday’s hearing and is believed to be in police custody at Lethem, assisting with investigation. She was recently discharged from a health institution there after she said that she was ill at the time of her arrest.
Davis explained to the Magistrate that she has two children and is a housewife.
Police prosecutor Lionel Harvey made no objection to bail, but requested that Davis be released on bail only if she agrees to report to the Lethem Police Station twice per week.
Magistrate Beharry granted Davis bail in the sum of $150,000 and transferred the matter to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for March 7.
In an earlier report, a source close to the investigation disclosed that the owner of the establishment had suspected one of the women of stealing cash and ‘making up the books’.
The proprietor’s suspicion was aroused after one of the accused built a brand new house and bought a car.
The fraud was uncovered when the proprietor audited the books and found discrepancies to the tune of over $2.3 million.
