What a way to say goodbye to the world

Dear Editor,
It is with dismay that I view the steady deterioration of many systems in this beloved country of ours. I am a Guyanese who left Guyana in my senior years. This was not my desire, but prevailing circumstances caused my departure from these shores.
Despite my leaving as a senior, I have been making numerous visits over time and here is what caused my dismay: – The state of the cemetery is appalling. History tells us that the plot of land which stretches from Charleston to what is now known as Mandela Avenue was given over to the nation many years ago for the sole purpose of burial of the dead.
My observation is that this historic gift of so many years should be treasured and maintained at a high standard by those who are responsible. Instead it has become a dumping ground for garbage.
It is unfair for citizens especially those who have spent many productive years, with no place left to rest at the end of their lives, but in a smelly heap of garbage. But even so, before in their twilight years, the average citizen is finding it very difficult to enjoy a comfortable life in Guyana, more reason for any opportunity to flee from this country. What a way to say goodbye to the world.
Another issue is the way the patriotic songs have been forgotten, these songs which were sung by us as children. Oh the pride and joy in which they were sung left deep feelings of pride for our country. Have all the proud patriotic Guyanese left the land of their birth and taken their pride with them?
My annoyance continues. Do we have a mosquito and fly invasion? Why am I asking this question, with garbage the height it is, mosquitoes and much more than mosquitoes will invade this beloved land of ours. I can remember a programme being conducted by the City Council called “Fogging”; Council also sprayed the drains. This went a far way in alleviating the mosquito and fly nuisance.
I cannot conclude this letter, Mr. Editor without wishing the entire country a very healthy 2011 and trust that even though it may look as if we are on the verge of a disaster, the authorities remove the blinkers and view the garbage in the cemetery as a disrespect and a health crisis waiting to happen.
Let’s all wish that the Mayor and City Councillors leave their blinkers behind and try to see clearly in the New Year ahead.
