The Minister’s comment needs clarification
Dear Editor,
I refer to Kaieteur News’ page 2 article of December 29, 2010, captioned, “500,000 tonnes of cane left uncut”, and more specifically to paragraph two therefore where the Minister of Agriculture said that, “If the cane had reached the factories, it would have resulted in sugar production of 274,000 tonnes”.
Mr. Editor, unless GuySuCo has a variety of cane which produces a TCTS (tonnes cane to tonnes sugar) of approximately 2:1, the Minister’s comment is inaccurate or he was misquoted.
With the current rainy weather, TCTS should currently be averaging 14:1, i.e. 14 tonnes cane to produce 1 tonne sugar.
It would be useful for the Minister’s comment be clarified because it has implications for both our sugar market and for the management of GuySuCo.
