Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who was found with a wound to the back of the head. The body of 51 year-old Harrinarine Singh was discovered around 06:00 hrs yesterday in a yard at Plantain Walk, West Bank Demerara.
A neighbour has reportedly been taken into custody.
The victim’s body was found in a pool of blood, with a gaping wound to the head. The discovery was made by passersby. The premises on which the man’s body was found, reportedly belongs to a Justice of the Peace, who occupies the upper flat of the building.
Residents who spoke with this newspaper said sometime around 02:00 hrs they heard what sounded like a scuffle, but no one ventured out to see what was transpiring. It was only until early yesterday morning when the man’s body was found, that persons said they believed what they had heard going on was in fact what eventually led to his demise.
According to the residents, Singh recently moved into the community and would do odd-jobs for persons in the community but never interfered with anyone. Those who knew the man said they last saw him alive around 21:00 hrs on Monday.
“Meh come and we talk and he tell me he ain’t feeling good, so he just lay down pon de cardboard and had a bottle a water next to he,” one of the man’s friends recounted.
He said he was not aware that his friend had died and could not say why someone would have wanted to kill Singh. The man went on to tell this publication that Singh was living with a relative at Thomas Street, Kitty, and had moved into the West Bank area some six months ago. The man related that most of Singh’s relatives reside overseas but would send money to upkeep him.
“He daughter does live in de US and she does always send money to some people around de Vreed-en-Hoop stelling and dey does call he (Singh) fuh collect de money.”
Meanwhile, the man who lives in the building where Singh’s body was found has since handed over a statement to the police as investigations are ongoing.
A post mortem examination is expected to be performed today.
