The eleventh edition of the ProAm boxing card that was initially scheduled to be held on December 31 next has been called off and the organisers have conveyed their regrets at this development.
Kaieteur sport spoke with President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool yesterday afternoon and he revealed that there is not enough time to arrange a qualitative card and as such all plans had to be shelved.
The organisers had already commenced negotiations with USA based bantamweight pugilist, Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry for a bout against local bantamweight contender, Dexter Marques.
The meeting that was scheduled for yesterday that would have named the other boxers for the card was consequently aborted.
However, Mr. Abdool assured that he has every intention of resuming the initiative in the coming year.
Notwithstanding this, he has bemoaned the absence of adequate corporate assistance even as he remains optimistic that the situation would improve during next year.
Meanwhile, Marques had already opened camp at the Forgotten Youth Foundation boxing gym, Albouystown under the tutelage of former amateur boxer, Sebert Blake and former Fecarbox champion, Joseph Murray.
He has expressed disappointment at the turn of events especially since he had just returned from a three months training stint in Toronto Ontario Canada.
He said that he was planning to display his newly acquired techniques but that would now have to wait until next month’s card.
Last Thursday afternoon, Marques increased the volume of work and boxed several rounds with some of the better boxers in the FYF gym. He said that while in Canada he had honed his skill at the Champion Boxing Gym, Mississauga Ontario and had boxed with several tough boxers training at that facility.
Marques further intimated that he had learnt quite a lot and now has a new perspective of the sport.
Meanwhile, President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool said that while he is pleased with the general reaction of the public to the ProAm boxing card, much more will have to be done in the coming year if the programme is to be sustained.
He noted that even though the card is yet to capture the imagination of a wide cross section of the sporting public; enough to translate into large crowds at the venue, the feedback received suggests that many patrons are expectant of the fights and view them on the television.
“This is the core idea in the first place; to create an awareness of the talent nestling in the gyms that is waiting to be harnessed,” said Mr. Abdool.
As it is now, the future of the initiative rests on the input of corporate Guyana. The admission price remains at $1000 while NCN TV will continue to carry a live broadcast of the bouts.
