Dear Editor,
I refer to the cover page of Kaieteur News, dated December 8, 2010, and note the caption and picture of four trucks acquired by the Ministry of Home Affairs for the capture of stray animals. I commend this initiative, as it will no doubt help make our roadways a bit safer.
However, I caution, that the capture of stray animals need the appropriate skills and training.
Animals facing capture will react with confusion and fear which will then prompt the survival skills of attack/defence.
Therefore to ensure the safety of the catcher, as well as the animals, proper training and protective gear will be required.
The GSPCA should be contacted for guidance and assistance on how to deal with such capture, as well as on the appropriate care of such animals once captured.
It is my hope that these animals will not be senselessly put down, as many can be integrated into already existing institutions, e.g. horses may be placed with the police force, farm animals in existing farms and domestic animals can be placed at the GSPCA for adoption.
I wish the Ministry of Home Affairs the best of luck with this endeavour.
A. Collin
