… discharge rounds at Ruimveldt Police station in drive by
A car load of persons descended on a grocery and rum shop located on Howes and Ketley Streets, Charlestown, Sunday evening, terrorizing the proprietor and beating his friends.
One man identified as Mottie Singh has since been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was severely beaten and gun-butted. The proprietor of the business establishment, Alec Shurland, said that at approximately 10:30 pm Sunday night he was closing his shop when five men in a white wagon, PKK 9689 turned up requesting a bottle of 5-year-old rum.
He said that one of the occupants of the vehicle was wearing a red shirt. He exited the vehicle and tried to force his way into Shurland’s business premises. “By de time I come out from the back entrance with de bottle of rum to give de man, I see another man come out of de car with a gun and he lash my friend that was closing the gate. He use the gun to lash he in his face.” Alec said.
“Another friend run to save the one that get lash to face, and three other of them come out and started to beat he up…I ask them what y’all beating that man for? Watch the police coming there and two of them had guns. They then get frighten after hearing about the police and collect the bottle of rum and shove the money out and drive away.”
The man said that he and his injured friends then left the Charlestown location for the Ruimveldt Police Station to make a report. “When we done make the report, and we coming down the steps, gunshots start firing and we drop to de ground. It was the same car with the gang that attacked us earlier.”
He said the car then drove away and they left for the Georgetown Public Hospital.
He said that yesterday while he was heading to pay his utility bill, he saw the said car that visited his business premises. It was at the Stabroek Market car park. “I then went to the Brickdam Police Station and tell de police about wha happen and the car that I see but the police didn’t help.”
According to the injured Mottie Singh, he was attacked while he tried closing the entrance of his friend’s business establishment. “When I get lash in me face I was bleeding and didn’t see anything else.”
According to reports, the driver and the car involved in the incident are in police custody. It was disclosed that the driver told police that he picked up the group of men at a wedding house at Annandale, East Coast Demerara, and was unaware that they were armed.
