The Kashif and Shanghai (K&S) Organisation has made it clear that they will not be held hostage when they booted Alpha United FC from their upcoming tournament after the club had opted to not be part of the competition if players’ purse had not improved.
The Organisation, which is responsible for hosting easily the biggest annual football competition in Guyana, refuted claims from President of the football club in question, Odinga Lumumba that varying conditions for players were not steadily enhanced.
As such, the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation held a press conference yesterday to announce its position as it relates to Alpha United FC, which is that the competition will proceed without their participation as Ann’s Grove FC is installed as a replacement.
“The announcement by Odinga Lumumba, President of the Alpha United Club made on Monday November 22, 2010 on the Supligen Sports Desk Programme that the aforementioned Club will not participate in the twenty first Annual Kashif & Shanghai Football Tournament has been accepted by the Organisation,” K&S Director, Kashif Mohamed indicated yesterday.
Mohamed, in his address, stated that the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) was notified of their decision and has accepted the nomination of Ann’s Grove FC as a suitable replacement. He also refuted claims that other invited teams had joined Lumumba.
“Contrary to what has been reported in some quarters, no other team originally invited to participate in the tournament has, as far as we are aware, declined the invitation,” Mohamed said, adding that stakeholders should be aware of these facts.
In addition to disclosing that the tournament has received sanctioning from the GFF, Mohamed also revealed that the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation met with Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds where a commitment was made for Government’s support.
The winning team in this year’s tournament will take home $2M, 26 replicas, the Gordon Trotz and Dale Bascom Lien Trophy, the Ansa McAl trophy and a two-year kit valued at $5M, which means that, totally, the winning team benefits from some $7M.
The second place team will receive the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company trophy, $1M, 26 silver medals and a one year kit sponsorship valued at $2M. Totally, the second placed team will benefit from $3M, exclusive of trophies and medals.
The third place team gets $500,000, 26 bronze medals and one set of uniforms sponsored by Dr. Colin Watson, valued at $700,000 while the fourth place team takes home $250,000 and 10 balls with the MVP to receive sporting equipment valued at $300,000.
