The word from the household of the People’s National Congress Reform frontbencher, Winston Murray, is that the life support system could be turned off as early as tomorrow. A source said that this decision could be taken when Murray’s grandchildren arrive in the country from London some time today.
Initially, Murray’s United Kingdom-based son was scheduled to come home and any decision on turning off the life support system would have been hinged on his arrival.
However, yesterday, word came that the son would not be coming at this time and that Murray’s grandchildren would arrive in his stead.
Murray collapsed in a shop on the East Bank Demerara when he stopped to buy a lotto ticket on his way home from the National Assembly on Thursday. Murray lived at Continental Park, East Bank Demerara.
Colleague and supporter for his candidacy for the PNCR nomination for the Presidential Candidate, Ronald Austin, said that after he collapsed, Murray had the presence of mind to tell someone that he should be taken to Balwant Singh Hospital. He also gave the person the keys to his vehicle.
By the time Murray reached the hospital he was unconscious. Doctors there found that there was heavy bleeding in his brain and that surgical intervention was critical.
On Sunday, the government funded the arrival of Guyana-born neurosurgeon, Professor Ivor Crandon, from Jamaica by way of a US$30,000 charter. By this time, Murray was moved to the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
When Dr Crandon examined him he found that Murray was brain dead and that any surgical intervention would have been meaningless. Dr Crandon has since returned to Jamaica.
Doctors who had examined Murray prior to Dr Crandon’s arrival had found that the parliamentarian’s blood pressure was elevated and that his diabetic condition had become critical. This was the initial hindrance to any surgical intervention.
These doctors also described Murray’s chances of recovery as very slim. That diagnosis worsened as the days went by.
In the hours after his collapse, Murray’s party, the PNCR, along with the other political parties and private citizens wished him a speedy recovery.
It seems that this will not be. Unconfirmed reports now state that members of Murray’s household are preparing for a funeral.
