Timely half centuries by Travis Dowlin and Leon Johnson propelled Demerara to first innings points against Essequibo in the GCB 4-day senior cricket competition at Anna Regina yesterday.
At stumps on day one, Dowlin was unbeaten on 59 (5×4, 2×6) while Johnson is not out on 56 (7×4, 2×6) as Demerara reached 173-3 in 42 overs in reply to the 122 made by Essequibo who batted first.
They featured in a unbeaten forth wicket stand of 102 after Demerara lost opener Trevon Griffith (04) at 15, Vishal Singh for 22 with the score on 56 and Stephney Jacobs for 2 when the score was 71. Dillon Heyliger took all three wickets to end the day with 3-46 off 12 overs.
Earlier Essequibo lost their first wicket at 38 when Royan Federicks was caught at slip for 15 and their second with the score on 40 and never recovered despite a 40 run seventh wicket stand between Anthony Adams who made 27 and debutant Keron Seenarine (13). Opener Norman Federicks led the batting for the home team with 39 as pacer Trevor Garraway grabbed 4-16 from 8 overs and leg spinner Amin Khan supported with 4-48 off 11 as Essequibo who lost their last four wickets without addition to the score were bowled out in 34 overs.
The game which started late because of broken bottles on the outfield continues today.
