Dear Editor,
The Honorable Minister of Agriculture has made a statement clarifying issues on the proposed Hope Canal project.
And as expected, a number of well-known letter-writers whose duty it is to support state-activity, right or wrong, have been playing variations of the Minister’s tune.
But the question which has not been answered in these official and semi-official releases is the following:-
The Hope Canal will drain into the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic is higher than the Guyana coast. It means that the Canal would only be functional at low-tide and would not be able to drain all the time.
Several high-powered hydraulic engineers have suggested that the main drainage flow be directed through the Demerara River. It is an axiom in water-engineering that such systems as the Guyana coast always use rivers when available to drain out heavy flooding.
Everyone wants the Mahaica/Mahaicony area to be drained but they do not want a system that only works part-time and fails when most needed, that is, at high tide and heavy rainfall.
