The Dr CC Nicholson Memorial Hospital is currently functioning with only one medic, who is administrating the duties and functions of the hospital. The institution has been without a doctor since January.
The facility, which is located at Golden Grove/Nabacalis, East Coast Demerara, has been reportedly understaffed and needs urgent assistance from the relevant authorities.
Services offered at this institution are maternal/child health care, including deliveries of babies, voluntary HIV/AIDS testing and counseling programmes, outpatient services and emergency.
An official at the facility told Kaieteur News, that the hospital is in need of an ambulance. The last one operated in July.
According to the source, the hospital is being funded by a foundation based in the United Kingdom, through the Ministry of Health.
Dr Bheri Ramsaran, Minister within the Health Ministry, said that the hospital is currently under renovations. He said that the institute was in a deplorable state, before the Ministry intervened.
“As a result of the assistance of the Ministry, the facility became a proper hospital,” said Dr Ramsaran.
The Minister noted that there is a doctor and a midwife, who are currently operating at the hospital and other doctors have been assigned, who will commence work shortly.
Dr Ramsaran said that one of these same doctors is also assigned to the Beterverwagting Health Centre.
Fifteen years ago, the institute was originally named the Nabaclis Health Centre, but the Dr CC Nicholson Memorial Hospital Foundation (UK) was created to keep alive the name of Dr CC Nicholson, who was a prominent Guyanese medical practitioner.
The foundation’s main aim was supported by the Government of Guyana at that time, thus renovations were done to the building, which was renamed the “Dr CC Nicholson Memorial Hospital.”
The Foundation is in partnership with the Government of Guyana in maintaining the hospital and providing health care for Guyanese living in the Golden Grove/Nabacalis area.
