Senior police officials were last night investigating the death of a young rural constable from the Springlands Police Station, who allegedly shot himself in the head with a detective’s gun.
The victim, identified as Naichiran Bhagrat, 20, shot himself in a Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, liquor restaurant at around 19:30 hrs.
Reports out of the area state that the victim and his girlfriend had recently separated and that he had told some persons that he intended to take his own life.
Kaieteur News understands that Bhagrat, a detective and another man were drinking in a liquor restaurant last night, when the detective got up to go to the washroom.
It is alleged that he was about to relieve himself when the rural constable, who had followed him, grabbed the detective’s firearm from behind.
He then allegedly turned the weapon on himself.
Police officials said that the detective has been placed under close arrest. The dead man’s body has been taken to the Skeldon Hospital mortuary.
The incident evokes memories of the still baffling case last July, in which two police ranks died in what officials insist was a murder/suicide.
It is alleged that 32-year-old Assistant Superintendent Ivelaw Murray shot and killed Constable 20631 Kevin Shepherd during an argument in the barrackroom at the Springlands Police Station.
ASP Murray was subsequently found dead at his home with two bullet wounds to the head.
