Dear Editor,
The murder of Neesa Gopaul has shocked the nation. But what’s more shocking is the neglect of duty by the people who are supposed to protect and care our children.
I am more disgusted at the role of the Children Protection Department of the Ministry of Human Services. And instead of embarking on a public relations cover up through the hiring of a public relations consultant, Minister Pirya Manickchand, who parades as a child and women guardian should take full responsibility.
The Minister is yet to answer a few questions:
How is it that such a small Ministry she is unaware of the cases being attended to by this department which looks at child abuse?
If our children are important does the Minister not ask for periodic status report of all cases being pursued? How often does the Minister meet with her senior officers to discuss constraints and other matters affecting their activities?
Is it true that since you have assumed the office we have been seeing an increase in violence against our women and children compared with your predecessors?
If our opposition is serious they must seek to hold the Minister accountable to her clear neglect of duty and poor administration. Children’s welfare and protection are not for public relations exercises and the occasion photo ops by the Minister in the media. If we cannot count on the statutory agencies to protect our children, who can?
