Lead horses impressive as October 24 event looms
With four million reasons (dollars) and trophies at stake when the Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club in collaboration with Jumbo Jet Auto Sales hosts a grand one day horseracing meeting next Sunday October 24 at the Bel Air Number 6 Village, West Coast Berbice racetrack, some of the leading racehorses have been impressive in practice at their respective home venues.
The programme will have as the feature race, the B& lower 1400 meters race sponsored by Banks DIH and carries a first prize of $450,000 with the second prize $225,000. Other events set for the day will see the 1,200 meters F and lower race where the winner takes home $250,000 while $350,000 is up for grabs in the 1,400 meters race for the three-year-old open for horses bred in Guyana and the West Indies.
The champion in the G & lower over a distance of 1,100 meters will receive $200,000 while $250,000 goes to the winner of the two-year-old Guyana and West Indies bred animals over 1,100 meters.
The horse that crosses the finish line first in the 1,100-meter race for I3 & lower (Maiden/non winners) will collect $120,000 while $130,000 will go to the winner of the I1 & lower event over 1,100 meters, which has been sponsored by Digicel.
The winner of the H & lower 1,100 meters race, which has been sponsored by Johnny Phillips of North West Investments Company of Port Kaituma, gets $150,000 with $100,000 up for grabs in the unclassified division 1, 2, & 3 (JK&L).

Several horses of the 65 that have already entered were performing impressive gallops in practice. Among them are some from the Colin Elcock Stable, Marcel Crawford Stable, Chris Jagdeo, the Jumbo Jet Stables including Miss Oriente, Tropical Passion, Jens Pride and Zebra, Appealing Harvest, Marathon man and Maracas Star.
Jumbo Jet Stable Trainer Sham Kumar expressed pleasure at the performance of the horses during practice.
An exciting day of races has been promised and owners must have their horses examined by the vet no later than 11:00hrs on race day. No late entries will be accepted.
The club reserves the right to cancel or reframe any race and if less than 7 horses start a race no fourth prize will be paid. If less than 5 horses face the starters’ orders then no third prize will be paid.
All races are being run under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) and all riders and trainers must have a valid GHRA license. All owners of two-year-old horses must provide their certificate of registration.
