Dear Editor,
I find it quite amusing that the Government Information Agency (GINA) is reporting that the Child Protection Agency is demanding an apology from me with regard to my comments (Wednesday 15th September) about Capitol News not being able to access information on Child Protection Week and several efforts to get information from that department failing because of officials not being allowed to speak to the media.
Capitol News contacted the Child Protection Agency everyday from Monday 6th September 2010 to Friday 9th September 2010 at various times hoping to get an interview on the plans for Child Protection Week and general information on Child Protection services in Guyana.
In an effort to get an interview with the head of the Agency Ms. Ann Greene we even hurried down to the Sophia Centre when told by the agency that she was there for a visit. When we got there, we were told that she was not there but was still at her office.
When we eventually got onto Ms Greene on Thursday 9th September at around 11am, she told our reporter Shaunee Thompson that she “is not making any comment to the media right now” and that we would have to check back at some other time. Ms Greene could easily confirm that bit of information for the Government Information Agency which appears to be spreading misinformation.
With regard to my mix up on the actual week of Child Protection activities I pointed out to the Minister Priya Manickchand just after the meeting in the company of other senior media members that it was a genuine mistake that was unscripted, however it does not change the ‘material fact’ that efforts were indeed made to contact officials of the Child Protection Agency. Even the Minister during her remarks and after pointed out that some officials were not prepared to speak to the media because of what she considered “tricky questions”.
I hereby encourage both GINA and the Child Protection Agency to cease publishing falsehood and I demand an apology. Gordon Moseley
