Dear Editor,
One gets used to the daily grunts and rants of KN columnist Freddie Kissoon but one of his friends needs to tell the man that this excessive ranting makes him appear downright foolish. Take for instance his 02-09-10 column, “An alleged, tiny tax-evader is dead; Mae’s School owner is self-bailed. Is it time to rumble?”
Let me state from the outset that my condolence is with the family of the late Godwin Maxwell. Having hailed from Mahaicony myself, I felt a particular tinge of sadness knowing that a Mahaiconian lost his life so tragically. (I grew up in Mahaicony Branch Road and was blessed with beautiful village life where Indians and Africans literally ate from the same pot.)
Speaking of the demise of Godwin Maxwell, Mr. Kissoon stated, “after he jumped from police custody into the Mahaicony River, the police shot at him. This unlucky human being has been found dead. The owner of Mae’s School, Mayfield French, was put on self-bail. When I read about these injustices, I wished I was younger. I would have done enraged things to protest these uncivilized injustices. I guess it is the time of those like Mark Benschop…”
It is unfortunate that this “respected” media person is so impetuous, hot-headed and erratic. As was clarified in the KN, the police did not shoot at Mr. Maxwell after he jumped into the Mahaicony River. It was only after Mr. Maxwell attempted his daring escape from the confines of the court in the presence of police that the latter opened fire (in apparent warning not to run).
The country (including the police) have suffered much with alleged lawbreakers escaping from police custody. When an alleged law breaker flees from a court (which is not an unusual incident), what is the police supposed to do?
In the column in question, the columnist chastises the owner of Mae’s school, chastises Magistrates and chastises the legitimacy of GRA course of action. I wonder if Mr. Kissoon were the owner/principal of a school, a Magistrate, or an officer of GRA, or a Police Officer, how far would his leniency extend? How far would he bend/not bend to compromise safety and integrity?
The question then begs, is this aficionado the epitome of a professor who longs for improvement for premier academic institution in the country?
