Dear Editor,
The Guyanese people are being fed a diet of false promises since the current President assumed office. It is either the Guyanese people are downright stupid or are living in fear, for if they express their views they are afraid of reprisals from the ruling cabal.
President Jagdeo has now made another outrageous promise to the Guyanese nation, 90,000 laptop computers for poor families. That represents about 12% of the 80% of the poor Guyanese families, what about the other 68% of the poor families? Wouldn’t they get jealous? What criteria would be used to distribute these computers? Would it be the same absurd system like the house lots distribution by placing names in a bag and pulling names at random?
Who would be the distributor of these laptop computers? Would it be one of the President’s men?
Can these poor families afford to pay GT&T $9,900 per month for their Internet connection and the additional electricity charges?
Why can’t the President distribute these laptops to every primary and secondary school and libraries in Guyana so that every one of the 80% of the poor Guyanese can have access to technology?
But then this promise of laptop for every poor family seems more than an election gimmick than sincerity in helping poor people to become technology savvy.
Most of these laptops would be traded for food if ever this promise is fulfilled.
We have seen in the past few years many false promises of President Jagdeo, just to list a few:
VAT will reduce the cost of living, promised payments to the Globe Trust customers, payments to CLICO policy holders, the establishment of a Law School at UG, computerization of the courts, end of blackouts by January 2010, hydro power by July 2010, a National Airline etc.
This President is more preoccupied with building a Marriott Hotel with these same poor taxpayers’ money instead of making Guyana a modern industrial and agricultural nation so that the poor can elevate themselves economically.
It seems that the President has some bad advisers or he just has yes men as advisers. Selling off the government shares in GT&T is not a good economic decision but selling off the government shares in Guyana Stockfeeds Inc. and the Pegasus Hotel might be more prudent as the major shareholder of these two entities is the President adversary and taking into consideration the recent outbursts by the President on the Pegasus Hotel.
