The Guyana women’s hockey team relegated Puerto Rico to the 7th & 8th place match set for this morning with a 1-0 victory over the hosts in the CAC hockey tournament.
The Guyanese suffered another setback in the very first minute when Captain Tricia Fiedtkou received an injury to her forehead by an errant Puerto Rican stick just as she was about to take a shot at goal. The Guyanese however took control of the game from the early minutes and looked set to chalk up a big score when Kerensa Fernandes drilled home their first penalty corner with a powerful shot to the diving goalkeeper’s right.
Despite several more raids on the Puerto Rican goal, the Guyanese failed to improve the score line and went to the break with a 1-0 lead.
The second half saw a continuation of the same pattern in the first and although the Guyanese lost concentration mid-way through the second half allowing Puerto Rico to come dangerously close to scoring, goalkeeper Alysa Xavier was up to the challenge. The game ended in a 1-0 victory for the Guyanese, earning them the opportunity to play Jamaica in the 5th and 6th place match. Jamaica won the right by defeating Bermuda by a similar margin.
In the women’s semi-finals, Trinidad handed out a 6-1 blistering of the Dominican Republic while Mexico defeated Barbados 2-0.
Trinidad is now set to clash with Mexico in the women’s final while Barbados take on the Dominican Republic. Guyana face Jamaica for fifth and sixth place while hosts Puerto Rico will battle Bermuda for seventh and eight.
The eight seeded Guyana will have to produce their best hockey to overcome the third seeded Jamaica. The last time the two clashed was in the Caribbean Cup held in Trinidad in 2007 where Jamaica secured a 1-0 victory. The Guyanese will hope to improve on that score this time around by securing a win which will leave them finishing in 5th place after being seeded in 8th position. The final matches will all be played today and the team is scheduled to return home tomorrow.
