Police in East Berbice on Wednesday made a major drug haul which netted over 80 pounds of compressed marijuana.
At about 07:00 hours yesterday, ranks acting on information conducted a search of a white Toyota 212 Carina motorcar, HB 4285 at the No 51 public Road.
The car was being driven by Stanton Baird of 62 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme.
A check was made of the trunk of the car and a suitcase and a black bag containing a total of 23 packets which were wrapped with tape and containing 34 kilos of compressed marijuana was discovered.
Baird was the lone occupant of the car which was heading in the direction of New Amsterdam.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver told investigators that he was hired by two men outside the Stabroek Market to undertake the trip.
He told the ranks that he did not know what the contents of the bags were.
He said that the men disembarked the vehicle just before the road block and he decided to continue driving. Of course investigators are not buying his story.
The driver and vehicle are in police custody as investigations continue.
