The opposition is falling into the PPP’s old trap

Dear Editor,
As we approach the “silly season” of national elections, the opposition is falling into the old trap that the practised PPP has set to distract it from what should be its primary priority. It is clear that the PPP’s propaganda machinery has stepped up its game and the opposition is now busy responding to almost every rotten red herring thrown to it by the party.
What it seems not to realise is that as it wastes its time doing so, the PPP faithful is working earnestly in every part of the country to get their message out. The President, as its chief cheerleader, is intensifying his attack against all critics of his administration, but moreso, the gang of “five bitter ole men” who in his view have outlived their usefulness and should move over and give the young people a chance! In doing so he is not only contemptuously discarding these persons to the dustbin of history, but more importantly, he is dismissing their message as insignificant and even counterproductive to national development efforts.
Jagdeo is as barefaced as they come since he exemplifies this new dispensation of youth who were “given the chance” (as if it were their natural entitlement!), which as the record shows, has been an abject, pathetic and miserable failure. Give it to the little dictators! They have learnt the lessons of Comrade JJ well and their strategy is purely Machiavellian in its conception, nature and application! The opposition must now take a step back and whether individually or as a collective, craft a discourse which speaks to how this country will move forward in the near future.
We all know that approaches to the way forward have failed so we must quickly conceptualise, document and articulate a set of principles, strategies and programmes based on our social, economic, political, and cultural imperatives which must then be presented to the Guyanese people for their perusal and approval at the next elections. There is no time to spare! An important corollary of this task is for the opposition forces to realise that the primary imperative of the next elections must be the removal of the PPP from office. It’s that simple! If we accept this we must then accept the fact that there is no single opposition political force that will defeat the PPP! Its highly refined modus operandi at election time is unparalleled in this country and some will even say in the region! So what is the way forward? I believe that there must be a coalition of all progressive, nationalist forces in the country, be they political, economic, social, religious, civil or cultural.
A Guyanese who is capable of garnering the widest support across the entire national landscape must be selected as a consensus candidate to lead the coalition into the next election and beyond. (I would like to see Moses Nagamootoo occupying that position). By all accounts, this seems the most viable option we have at the moment which can achieve success in ousting the unconscionables who now lord it over us.
There is no time to waste! The combined opposition must successfully and rapidly conclude the task of creating the coalition, appointing its leader, and then proceed with the more arduous task of presenting the blueprint for the new way forward to the people in a timely manner for their perusal and approval at the upcoming polls.
Its only imperative must be to stay on message in the re-education of the electorate and not allow itself to be distracted by anything!
In the meantime, no one must pay heed to the PPP whose little Caesars in their power-induced state of drunkenness, will continue to stagger, mouthing off their desperate inanities to the people, led by Jagdeo, their garlanded, pompommed cheerleader-in-chief.
