The recent conflagration in Mahdia which wreaked havoc on the Mahdia Arcade last week Thursday night did not start in the Hinds Mini Mall as was previously reported in this newspaper.
In fact, tangible evidence has since surfaced revealing that the fiery disaster may have erupted in a goldsmith shop instead.
Reports are that several persons, including investigators, have confirmed this, thus firmly ruling out that the fire had its origin in the Mini Mall owned by Roger Hinds.
According to the businessman, he is satisfied that the fire did not start in the section that housed his business and is now grateful that there is proof to substantiate this concept.
Reports are that the fire started around 19:00 hrs on July 1, and destroyed a large grocery store which had been recently renovated and extended to include living quarters. The fire also ruined nearly two dozen small buildings which offered food, clothing and grocery to the miners who either live at Mahdia or who pass through to other mining locations but use Mahdia as a base.
People in the community immediately formed a bucket brigade, sourcing water from the numerous tanks that stored rain water and from man-made reservoirs.
The nearest source of water was a creek but getting the precious liquid from it was all but impossible, reports suggest. It was disclosed, too, that none of the miners in the area had enough hoses to link to reach the water source. Further there was no generator large enough to pump the water.
The fire spread to the arcade aback of the grocery store and destroyed every building there. Attempts were made to save as much as possible but the fire spread quickly. By the time the fire burnt out, some two hours later nearly two dozen buildings had been destroyed. Losses are estimated to run into hundreds of millions of dollars.
A governmental team had visited the area and according to Hinds, the people of Mahdia are grateful for the assistance that has been forthcoming.
According to Hinds, “We the people of Mahdia appreciate the quick response and assistance that was portrayed by the Government of Guyana…The Ministers they personally visited the areas within hours of the disaster and there was an interest.”
Monetary contributions have since been offered to those affected by the fire. Hinds revealed that the assistance is in fact being regarded as “an act of great kindness and shows that there are indeed humanitarians.”
He said that the affected people of Mahdia have since been informed that plans are already in the pipelines to help with the process of relocation and/or rebuilding. This process according to Hind’s report will be uniformed and modern and will include water supply, electricity among other basic amenities.
