– Under-18, Open Categories reach quarter-finals
Marian and Plaisance Academies both ensured that they were among the Final Four teams in the Under-16 category of National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF) yesterday at the Sports Hall as the tournament winds down to its crucial knockout rounds.
Plaisance proved superior to Marian Academy with a 42-39 points’ win. However, the teams are still the semis following their good showing in the preliminary round. Marian will play Saints in the U-16 Final Four Sunday while Plaisance play Kwakwani.
Nduka Horatio scored 15 points for Plaisance with Wesley Forde and Kelvin Yorrick scoring 11 points apiece in support. For Marian, Keiron Braithwaite was the leading scorer with 11 points as Jonathan Beaten offered offensive back-up with 10 points.
President’s College kept their quarter-finals hope alive in the Under-18 playoffs when they rolled over an East Bank combined team 47-20 yesterday.
The quarter-final draws in this category are to be released today following the first round completion last night.
Devon Warren and Okemy Harper scored 14 points each for President’s College while Leonard Nurse had a similar amount of points for the East Bank. Up to Kaieteur Sports’ press time, there were two places to be filled in the last eight of the U-18 contest.
As the leading school teams in the country continues to dominate in the tournament, Neil Gordon and one of last year’s national junior team nominee, Cowen Gittens gave Saints an easy, lopsided win against nemesis, Bishops High in the Open competition.
Gordon scored 13 points and Gittens nine points to help Saints to a 34-13 win against Bishops in the marquee category of the event.
Ronald Jordon was the leading scorer for Bishops; he had five points for the team that had a terrible offensive afternoon.
The competition continues today with quarterfinals games in the U-18 and Open categories while an All-Star game is fixed for tomorrow.
The semi-finals are set for Sunday whilst the tournament is expected to conclude on Monday with the three finals.
