Dear Editor,
I wish to state that the United States’ very high handed approach to countries in the world when it comes to judging them, whether it is based on the human trafficking situation or their economic successes or failures, is wholly unfair and unreasonable.
Guyana’s position on the Tier 2 Watch List suggests that we are complicit in and totally disregard situations where our women and children are being used and abused. This is obviously not the case as there have been several interventions made to bring these issues to a head and stamp them out.
Admittedly there is more that can and should be done to address TIP in Guyana and in other Caribbean countries that have been placed on Tier 2 Watch List of the United State’s vaunted TIP Report.
But due acknowledgement ought to be given to what has already been done and what is still being done to eradicate TIP in this part of the world.
Secondly it is most unusual that a country such as the United States of America; a country so large and heavily populated, is placed on Tier 1, that being the highest possible position on the List. How can a country that has set itself up as Judge, Jury and Executioner for the world, impartially judge itself in any scenario?
It is interesting to note that in every Report, List or Catalogue of a situation in the world, the US, without fault, finds itself at the top of the page, and in most cases they are the ones performing the judging. Interesting indeed!
