Dear Editor,
Is there a logical explanation for the excessive tolerance and lenience regarding criminal acts committed by persons employed in the Guyana Police Force (GPF) by the authorities?
Is it legal for police to kill without a legitimate reason, or to shoot down suspects? Is it legal to torture the innocent because of accusations without evidence?
Is it legal for police to assault children, burn them, traumatize them and shoot them down? Can anyone identify the reasons why the GPF is causing this country more pain than the criminals themselves?
Brutality, injustice, sorrow! Where is Guyana heading?
Where is human rights knowledge in the minds of those individuals in the force?
Are they not being properly trained?
The public need answers, we need to see action and hear the authorities speak and address these issues that are plaguing our nation.
One of the reasons why the cruelty is continuing is because the authorities are not taking severe action against these offenders, they are lenient with them.
Probably to protect the image and repetition of the GPF, but guess what, “it’s tarnished and degraded in the eyes of our nation, by children, mothers, fathers”, the blood shed of innocent lives have stained the GPF and their tears and screams are the proof of the pain.
One thing after the next, they burnt a child a while ago and now so extreme shot innocent Kelvin Fraser twice then took him for questioning at the station then threw him into the back of the vehicle and took him to the West Demerara Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
How can a person be so heartless to a child? They heard him cry and beg and still delayed and took his life.
This is what Guyana has become, a place where the most suitable alibi and excuse of persons in the force is accepted by the authorities.
It seems as though the GPF recruits persons who should be in therapy.
Let them not vent out their frustrations on society, if they need more money, let them protest and stop looking for bribes and leave the drivers in peace.
If they have the urge to kill let them go hunting for jaguars that are affecting the residents of region 9.
Nevertheless, generalisations should not be made taking into consideration the individual differences of officers, but it is true that the ones who stand and watch and do nothing are as guilty as those who commit the act especially those in authority who can make a difference.
At this time the Patentia Secondary School is in chaos, the children hearts are bleeding to see what has happened to their friend and they need justice, many of them are stunned with fear because of this incident.
It is advisable for the relevant authorities to employ school counselors, because this new generation will be one of many mental illnesses if they don’t start acting now.
We are promoting the rights of a child and demoting it at the same time, parents cannot hit their children, teachers cannot either, but the GPF can traumatize them, burn them and shoot them down.
The picture being painted in the eyes of the public at this moment is one of ignorance, heartlessness and cruelty.
Those who are suppose to be protectors of this nation are making the biggest contribution in destroying its potential for a brighter future.
Where does the future of Guyana lie? Is it not in the hands and hearts of the children? Give them the respect and justice they need.
