Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction and abhorrence with the restrictions placed on the freedom of some members of the Princess Hotel (Casino) Dance Troupe.
It has been brought to my attention that some members of your Dance Troupe are being prevented from socializing with Guyanese. I consider these restrictions inhumane, a violation of the dancers’ rights, an affront to our labour laws and gross disrespect for my country and its people.
It is against civilized norms for any human being, regardless of nationality or location, to be denied the right to develop friendships and to converse and socialize with other human beings. Such restrictions on personal liberties are for societies that deny the rights of its subjects, not for a free and democratic country like Guyana.
The very nature of social existence involves being able to freely interact with other human beings. Wherever a foreign worker goes, he or she should enjoy the right to get to know the people, the country and the local culture through the cultivation of human relations. The world will be a much safer, secure and better place if we take the time to appreciate other cultures.
Your Dance Troupe has every right to enjoy such freedoms
I have been personally offended by the restrictions placed on the Russians since I know all of the individuals concerned and respect them as fellow human beings. I am particularly peeved since I am a long-standing customer of your establishment and have over the years spent a great deal of my money in patronizing your business. Your records will establish this. But I am also someone who is deeply concerned about the rights of all human beings and what I have witnessed in respect to these dancers is tantamount to a denial of their personal freedom. This gravely upsets me. I trust that the restrictions that have been placed on these individuals will be removed so that they can enjoy the culture, friendship and hospitality of Guyana.
