Cricket fans were once again treated to several exciting matches when action in the Carib Beer National Softball Cricket Tournament, organized by the Guyana Softball League in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, continued at venues countrywide.
When the action got underway at 09:00hrs, Number 2 Die Hard XI registered a 75 runs victory over Bath Softball team. The former team won the toss and elected to take first strike. Anil Jainauth lashed an enterprising half century (52) laced with five huge sixes to lead his team to a challenging total of 138-2 in their allotted overs. Alim Gafoor supported with 21. In reply, Bath Softball Team were restricted to 73-1 in 10 overs.
Blairmont Union XI then defeated D’Edward SC by 3 wickets after the latter team elected to bat first and scored 113-3 in their allotted overs. Ajay Sukra (24) was the principal run scorer while Wasim Subhan, bowling for the opposition snared 4-20 from 3 overs. In reply, Blairmont Union made 114-7 in 10 overs after Bryan Bissoondial hit an unbeaten 24.
Yard Cobra then tackled Shattazare Back and led by a quick fire knock of 31 by Terry Evans amassed a challenging 148 when their overs ran out. Evans returned later to take 4-15 from 3 overs which contributed to the eventual dismissal of Shattazare Back for 83 in 12.3 overs.
Yard Cobra XI returned later in the day and defeated Blairmont Untouchables by 8 wickets. Led by a destructive bowling spell from Tom Haley (3-12 from his 3 overs), Blairmont Untouchables XI made 83 -3 in their allotted overs with David Dwarka (19) taking the batting honours. Yard Cobra then lashed off the required total (84) in 5 overs while conceding 2 wickets.
Yard Cobra once again featured, this time in the finals, disposing of Number 2 Die Hard XI by 3 wickets.
Number 2 Die Hard XI batted first and made 70 all out in 7.5 overs after Shawn Morris sent down an impressive spell (4-9 from 3 overs).
Yard Cobra X1 made heavy weather of the total but eventually romped home at 71-7. Yard Cobra XI has now qualified for the Berbice Zone semi- finals to be at a date still to be announced.
Meanwhile, the tournament continues tomorrow with two matches in the East Bank zone.
