Dear Editor,
Everywhere I traveled around Trinidad to conduct a post election poll, people of all ethnic groups and ages and supporters of all political parties have very high expectations of the newly elected government led by Madame Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar.
People have faith and confidence in her leadership and answers positively about questions relating to her. They say she will succeed.
They feel she would do a much better job than her predecessors and they point to her style of governance being inclusive consulting the public, as opposed to being “exclusive”, ignoring other opinions. She has not shown the arrogance of her predecessors.
People say the country is in an almost total mess facing real problems and they want immediate relief.
They remind me that: crime is out of control and streets in disrepair; traffic congestion is unbearable; poverty is rising and cost of living is unaffordable; graft and corruption are endemic; outgoing government officials have been contemptuous of them; flooding is wreaking havoc on their lives. And yet pipe water is in short supply in many areas.
Yes, they want relief. But people are willing to give Kamla a chance to settle down and get a handle of things because they feel confident she will not neglect them like the previous governments.
They like her down to earth style how she has taken charge going to work right away after being sworn in with fetes taking a back burner. That is unheard of by any government anywhere.
Although expectations are very high for results, Kamla’s government will enjoy a short honeymoon because of the way she has started. She is not evasive or aloof. She is not uppity. She has read the riot act that the government is working for the people and not the people working for the government as previous governments thought.
The people say Kamla will tackle head on the burning issues that have made their lives miserable over the last several years. So Kamla will be given, and deserve, time to produce results before she begins to hear any complaint.
But voters hope they won’t have to complain to get results. And so far, she has not faced any major complaint. She has had the best start of any government. Vishnu Bisram
