Due to heavy rainfall in Amerindian communities which has caused agriculture lands to be flooded, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs has released $3M Saturday to assist farmers in Massakenyari, Deep South, Region Nine.
According to the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, food supplies, planting materials and tools to aid the replanting of crops on new farmlands in cases where the lands have become unsuitable for farming were donated.
The Minister indicated that the Ministry is closely monitoring the situation so as to provide the necessary support to farmers that will enable the sustainability of agriculture.
She noted that while Regions One, Three and Four have not reported any cases of flooding, other Regions including Five and Six are affected.
The Ministry revealed in Region Five at Moraikobai, 26 farms with crops such as pumpkins, eddoes, cucumbers and cassava have been affected while in Region Six at Orealla five farms have been flooded and this is because the farms are on low lands.
Several areas in Region Seven where ground provisions are being planted including Phillipai, Quebenang, Kako, Paruima and Chinoweng have been affected by the heavy rainfall. In addition, farms in Chenapau, Region Eight are affected by flood, while in Region Nine there have been reported cases of flooded farmlands in Central Rupununi.
