Dear Editor,
I was overtaken by mirth at the berating of the system of governance in exotic style and high quality fashion by Churaumanie Bissundyal.
The poetic ease with which his pen flowed over the paper did evoke a riposte by one of the President’s men where he saw naked venom in the poet’s words. Churaumanie was advised to come and help share his special skills as the President’s man himself has done.
If this is the ‘Chura’ I know, then he is a very urbane and unassuming man and something must have riled him up to the point of his outpourings. The ‘Chura’ I know is Sheik and Nazir Mohamed’s buddy friend and he would journey to the GCC on many weekends to see us play cricket.
They were from the Enmore area and when I saw and spoke with Sheik many years ago, he told me that ‘Chura’ had migrated and doing well academically. So, if you are the same ‘Chura’ and reading this, hail up. We had good times playing cricket back in the days. I would also urge that he takes up the challenge given by his now formidable debater on things unCheddi-like to become Cheddi-like, by offering his services, of course not for the $$$. We need plenty of help as you can see.
‘Chura’ as a writer and poet himself would better understand when freedom to write and express oneself is curtailed and challenged with high and mighty powers. The stifling of expressions in modern societies is fought with much verve and assiduity as this basic human right cannot and must not be tampered with.
However, various guises and clandestine ways are employed to bring pressure on freedom of expression. I would be the first to admit that these rights carry responsibilities and do not mean anything goes. Laws are there to ensure that people get redress for excesses. For this I see the all-powerful state being the least chagrined when they feel they are abused as all the apparatuses are available for retort and they use these extensively with the battery of eminent men and women the state employs.
Freddie’s pen knows few limits in its daily curse. Two weeks ago he considered the entire opposition as inept and lazy in exposing and jumping at opportunities he saw in the National Assembly for serious questioning and taking certain functionaries to task.
Matter of fact an old friend was irate in expressing his frustration to me about the state of things in Guyana, saying very clearly that the opposition in Guyana is Freddie Kissoon. That is the kind of acclaim he has gained because of his column. Even ACDA and the PNC who Freddie’s pen has scorched, have condemned the act of throwing a filthy missile in his face. So too did the Government. But is who do the dutty wuk though?
O. G.
