Region Nine held a star-studded Georgetown combination to a nil-all draw in the final match of the first round of Women’s Inter-Association Football Competition which is being held under the auspices of the Guyana Football Federation.
Part of the action in the Women’s Inter-Association Football Competition between host Georgetown and Region Nine, at the GFC ground yesterday.
Played yesterday at the GFC ground, the visiting lasses from the Lethem community came up against a strong Georgetown unit that included a few members of the ‘Lady Jaguars’ who’ve qualified for the CAC Games in Puerto Rico and they gave a solid account of themselves.
Even though no goals were scored after 80 minutes, the duration of the match, the Region Nine unit looked the more threatening and came closest to scoring the game winner when Sonia Griffith, the attacking striker took advantage of a defensive blunder inside the penalty area, but her fierce right-foot shot beat the Georgetown custodian only to cannon into the crossbar and rebound into play offering a reprieve for the favourites.
Threatened by the sudden surge and confidence of the visitors, the hosts then initiated several counterattacks with some fervour led by national left back Collette Hope, who played in an unaccustomed role upfront.
She, however, squandered a few opportunities, while the Region Nine defence held on stoutly even with the disadvantage of being a bit shorter.
In the end, no team was able to penetrate the respective goalkeepers and when the final whistle sounded the game remained locked in a goalless stalemate.
