By 23:00 hours Patrick Manning had conceded defeat.
One analyst said that the PNM defeat was due to a number of factors, one of which was disenchantment with Manning’s policy and the scandals that accompanied his party. The other was voter apathy among PNM supporters who had grown fed up with their party.
The result is the worst defeat suffered by the PNM since 1986.
Ms Persad-Bissessar had campaigned on a platform of the need for change. Her UNC/COP alliance reportedly swept the polls right down to winning the two seats in Tobago.
She had formed a coalition with the opposition forces and the general view was that in the male dominated political arena, a woman at the helm of the country would care more about the real issues and people rather that the usual obsession with power, money and office.
