Residents of Cotton Field, West Coast Berbice, are to get a new well, in addition to the recently commissioned water treatment plant.
On Monday, Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, indicated that works had started a few years back to put in a new well but because of a problem with the contractor, the works were stalled.
However, to boost supply to the recently commissioned $400M water treatment facility that was opened earlier this month by President Bharrat Jagdeo, attempts will now be made to restart work on the well.
Currently, the facilities there are being supplied from the Rosignol pump station which uses a new transmission main to the retention tank where it is settled and oxidized.
The plant is capable of supplying 15,000 residents with clean, safe water, government officials have said.
With counterpart funding from the Government, the World Bank provided a significant portion of the funds for the water treatment facility after indicating in 2003 its intention to fund a water supply intervention.
Following a technical survey and a feasibility study by GWI in 2004, the project began the following year with the contract awarded to the international firm UEM Inc of Trinidad and Tobago.
Most of the civil works were however, executed by the local firm Home Designs and Engineering which is at present undertaking the construction of the Queenstown water treatment plant.
The plant has a storage capacity equivalent to about 800 black Rotoplastic water tanks and according to Minister Ali, this year will see six water treatment plants completed across the country.
In the design of the water treatment facility the sand filtration system, one of the most modern systems was installed.
This helps to reduce the energy cost of producing water.
