Mark Vieira (second right foreground) chats with reporters at the last local Race Meeting at the South Dakota Circuit.
– Believes that Guyana stand a good chance of doing well
Former champion driver Mark Vieira in an interview with Kaieteur Sport on Thursday endorsed the sentiments expressed by fellow driver Kevin Jeffrey, who had told this newspaper that the local competitors selected to compete in the opening leg of the Caribbean Series in Jamaica stand an excellent chance of gaining top honours against their regional counterparts.
Vieira, who had been absent from the track for almost one year, before making a return at the last local Meeting said he believes his Mazda RX8 which is equipped with a new 20B Rotary engine is suitable for the track at Dover Speedway which is fast and has a long straightaway that requires lots of horsepower.
The Guyanese who is well respected in the Caribbean for his daredevil skills and ability said that the regional Body is attempting to separate the two groups that is the four and two wheel driven cars to make the Series much more competitive.
“When you understand the significant advantage that someone like Barbadian Roger Mayers have with his Ford Focus which is clearly far more superior in horsepower that most of us then you see the need to place the cars in two different categories,” Vieira said.
He added that they’ve been trying to bring back the championship title to Guyana for a couple of years now and according to him this is a good time to do so.
“The composition of the team makes me feel that the time is now, especially when you know that Andrew (King) has been doing well along with Kevin,” the local speedster expressed.
Commenting on the car, Vieira revealed that it is working well, informing that they’ve been steadily reducing the lap times and getting faster and faster.
“Every day we are learning something more about the car and hopefully come race day it will be almost perfect for us to feature on the podium,” he stated.
Vieira has visited the track twice before and according to him it remains the one track in the region that he hasn’t secured good results at, a scenario he is determined to change. His confidence is understandably high because in his judgement, the circuit favours cars with a lot of horsepower and he feels that he is right up there with that.
Vieira is being sponsored by V-Power and Digicel.
The team is expected to leave next Wednesday.
