IKURUWA, CANJE RIVER – Police in Berbice are on the hunt for a cash crop farmer who reportedly shot his employee and vanished. The incident occurred about 14:30 hours on Monday at Ikuruwa on the Canje River.
The victim, 24-year old Leamont Leacock of Lot 18 Betsy Ground, East Canje, was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was admitted and is said to be under police guard. According to police reports, Leacock and his employer who bears the alias ‘Sukie’ had an altercation about a payment and it escalated. The farmer allegedly armed himself with an unlicensed shotgun and discharged a round in the direction of Leacock. The man was shot on the lower part of both legs.
After ‘Sukie’ reportedly committed the act, he fled the scene and residents in the vicinity transported the victim out to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
The victim, Leamont Leacock, is no stranger to police and has at least one matter pending at a court on the West Coast of Berbice where he was charged for possession of a firearm.
