Can a person travel overseas with a photocopy of his passport?

I wish to comment on the statement made by the DPP as reported in the Kaieteur News on May 1, 2010.

The article reads, “The request by the legal team for embattled television station owner CN Sharma to have copies of his passport has nothing to do with boosting Sharma’s defence but about him wanting to travel to Canada, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack charged yesterday.”

I am not aware that people can travel with photocopies of passports. The defence is in order to obtain as much evidence as possible to make their case stronger.

I am no supporter of Mr. Sharma but the DPP should be aware that persons charged with serious offences would have their names placed on the blacklist at the airport, so I cannot see how Mr. Sharma could have left Guyana for Canada and with a photocopy of his passport.
