A patient of the National Psychiatric Hospital (Mental Hospital) in Fort Canje was found yesterday floating in a trench in the compound.
The man, Ramesh Singh, 58, of Strand, New Amsterdam, was a patient of the institution for the past 16 years.
His nude body was discovered around 08:20 hrs, by a staff member. The trench is one of a few found in the compound and is very shallow – about two feet deep. No marks of violence were found on the body.
No one knows how the man met his demise, but it is suspected that he drowned.
The man was last seen around 16:00 hrs on Thursday evening.
The body is at the New Amsterdam Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination while investigations are continuing.
