Cops still to find Mandela Avenue hit-and-run driver
Traffic Chief Neil Semple said yesterday that a licence number that was provided to them is not that of the driver in Saturday’s hit-and-run accident on Mandela Avenue.
Senior Superintendent Semple said that a woman who said that she witnessed the accident alleged that the vehicle which struck and killed Gregory Greaves is a white SUV.
Kaieteur News understands that a man, who had also claimed to be an eyewitness, had given the victim’s relatives a licence number. He claimed that the vehicle was a gold-coloured Tundra.
The Traffic Chief said that after being given a licence number and checking at the licence office, police located a vehicle that was green in colour.
Semple revealed that the driver claimed that he had driven through Mandela Avenue when the accident had occurred.
The man claimed that he stopped and spoke to a minibus driver before leaving the scene.
The Traffic Chief said that they are looking for a white vehicle, and not the green-coloured one that the man is driving.
But Greaves’ relatives told Kaieteur News that a gold-coloured Tundra struck a minibus before hitting Greaves.
The eyewitness reportedly told the relative that he spoke with the minibus driver, who claimed that he pursued the Tundra to Cemetery Road.
The bus driver allegedly told the ‘eyewitness’ that the driver and a woman were in the vehicle and the driver had promised to return to the scene and take Greaves to the hospital.
Greaves, called ‘Bald Head’, of Lot 589 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, was riding east along Mandela Avenue when he lost control and fell on the roadway.
Two youths said that the motorcyclist was about to stand when a CRV, which was travelling in the same direction, crushed his skull. The driver then fled the scene.
