Alpha squander initiative to draw with Puerto Rico’s River Plate
Alpha United was very close to recoding their first win in the Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup but squandered their chance of recording history when their mental capacity and lack of experience faded when it mattered most.
‘The Hammer’ were leading Puerto Rican side River Plate 1-0 compliments of an Anthony Abrams goal in about the 50th minute, up until the 90th minute when the Puerto Ricans capitalised on Alpha’s lapses in the dying moments to tuck in a vital equaliser thereby spoiling what would have been a sweet win for the Guyanese side.
According to Guyanese Lawyer Toussaint Boyce who resides in Trinidad and Tobago and witnessed the game, River Plate starting side was made up of one Puerto Rican and 11Agrentinians but the Guyanese side was not intimidated and ran the opposing side in to the ground.
“It was too good to be true and they lost their heads. Alpha wasted three good and clear chances before Abrams scored.”
River Plate got the score leveler in the 90th minute.
An Alpha defender got injured, took quite some time walking around the pitch before coming back on during which time Abrams received a 2nd yellow card running back to cover for the defender while Captain Howard Lowe excited the field with a shoulder injury even though it was the 90th and 4 minutes of added on time was signaled by the 4th official.
River Plate quickly took the free kick with the Alpha defence out of position and according to reports, scored the cheapest goal you would ever see to level the scores.
No doubt it was a disappointing end to a spirited and excellent performance by ‘The Hammer’. More details in a subsequent edition.
The final game in the group to decide the winner is set for this evening between group leaders San Juan Jabloteh of Trinidad and Tobago and River Plate.
